A Zanzibar guide written for real trips

This hub covers the decisions that actually shape a Zanzibar trip: when to go, which beach to pick, how long to stay and how the island fits with a Tanzania safari.

  • Built by a Tanzania team

Safari Soles plans safaris, Kilimanjaro climbs and Zanzibar stays every week, so the advice here comes from routes we actually run.

  • Safari and beach as one trip

Most travellers reach Zanzibar after the parks. Every guide is written with that connection in mind, including flights and night counts.

  • Honest about seasons and tides

Beaches here behave very differently by tide and month. We say which coast suits which traveller instead of calling them all perfect.

  • Practical, not promotional

Costs, entry requirements, transfer times and realistic pacing, so you can plan before you talk to anyone about booking.

How Zanzibar fits with a Tanzania safari

Safari first, beach second is the routing that works best: game drives while you are fresh, then slow island days to finish.

Quick routing answers

The short version of the questions we are asked most about combining parks and coast.

You have 10 days total
6 nights safari, 3 nights Zanzibar
You want the Great Migration
Plan Serengeti months first, then the beach
You are climbing Kilimanjaro
Add at least 3 recovery nights on the coast
You are travelling with children
Short safari plus a shallow lagoon beach

What Zanzibar costs in practice

Island costs move with season, beach area and hotel standard far more than with anything else. These three tiers cover most trips we plan.

  • Comfortable mid-range

Beachfront hotels with breakfast, private transfers and a couple of excursions. The most common Zanzibar standard after a safari.

  • Premium and honeymoon

Boutique hotels, sea-view suites, private dinners and dhow charters, usually with half board and airport transfers included.

  • Simple and local

Guesthouses and small lodges on the east coast, shared transfers and local restaurants. The easiest way to stretch a longer stay.

Planned by people who live the route

This hub exists because the same Zanzibar questions come up on every safari enquiry we answer.

Zanzibar planning questions

  • Yes. It is the most common way travellers finish a Tanzania trip. Safari days start early and involve long drives, so a few slow beach days afterwards give the trip a natural ending. Flights from Arusha, Serengeti airstrips and Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar run daily, so the transfer usually costs you half a travel day.
