Zanzibar Water Activities

Zanzibar's water is the whole point. Here is what is genuinely worth booking, what it costs, when conditions are right and how to avoid the operators you should not get in a boat with.

The three activities that justify a whole day are snorkelling or diving at Mnemba, a sandbank and blue lagoon boat trip, and a sunset dhow cruise on the west-facing coast.

  1. Morning trips have calmer water, better light and fewer boats.
  2. Marine park fees are usually excluded from advertised prices.
  3. Skip swim-with-dolphins tours; observe from the boat instead.
  4. Reef shoes and reef-safe sunscreen are essential kit.
  5. Check life jackets, shade and a radio before you board.

Two notes on that table. First, marine park and conservation fees are almost never included in the headline price: Mnemba and Chumbe both charge per person per visit, in cash. Second, prices from your hotel are typically 10 to 20 per cent above the beach price, and that margin buys you a licensed boat, insurance and someone accountable if things go wrong. Take the hotel price. Our Zanzibar travel guide sets this against the rest of your planning, and the month-by-month season guide explains why conditions shift through the year.

How to check a boat before you get in it

  • Life jackets for everyone on board, including children, in the right sizes.
  • A working engine and a spare, or a radio and a phone in a dry bag.
  • Shade: equatorial sun on open water for four hours is genuinely dangerous.
  • Drinking water carried for the whole trip.
  • A licensed operator, not a man with a boat on the beach.
  • A clear return time, and someone at the hotel who knows it.
  • Insurance: confirm your travel policy covers diving depth and watersports.

Tides and currents on this coast are strong. The reef flats that look like a paddling pool at low tide fill fast, and the channels between sandbanks move quickly, and this varies by coast. See our comparison of Zanzibar's beaches for how each one behaves. Every year visitors get into difficulty because nobody explained the tide to them. Any operator we use briefs it before departure, and so should yours. The travel requirements guide covers the insurance side.

Find the right water day for you

Which water day suits your group?

Three questions and we will point you at the trip that fits your group, season and appetite.

  1. Who is going?
  2. What do you most want from the day?
  3. When are you travelling?

Answer all 3 questions and your result appears here.

Guidance only, always follow your operator's on-the-day safety briefing.

Common mistakes to avoid

The planning slips we see most often. Each one is easy to avoid once you know it.

  1. Booking from a seller on the beach rather than through the hotel.
  2. Taking an afternoon boat when the morning sea is far calmer.
  3. Not carrying cash for marine park fees.
  4. Booking a swim-with-dolphins trip.
  5. Assuming travel insurance covers diving and kitesurfing without checking.
Safari Soles planning note

Two good water days beat five mediocre ones. We would rather book you an early private boat to Mnemba and one sandbank day than fill the week with shared tours that all leave at eleven and arrive at the same reef together. This works for travelling with children too, and we can plan a custom trip around the water days that matter most to your group.

Questions worth asking any operator

Copy these questions into your enquiry: to us or to any operator you are comparing. The answers tell you more about a Zanzibar trip than any brochure.

  1. Is the operator licensed and insured?
  2. Are marine park fees included, and how much are they?
  3. What time does the boat leave and return?
  4. Are there life jackets in children's sizes and shade on board?
  5. Does our travel insurance cover diving depth and watersports?

What Safari Soles puts in writing

Nothing important about your trip should be discovered at check-in. Each of these is put in writing for your itinerary before you pay a deposit.

  • Which beach area, and why that one for our dates?

Tide, wind and atmosphere vary hugely by coast; the reason should match how you want to spend your days.

  • What exactly is included in the board basis?

Half board, full board and all-inclusive mean different things island to island: drinks and excursions are often outside.

  • How are transfers and internal flights handled?

Baggage limits, drive times and connection buffers decide whether a safari-to-beach day is calm or stressful.

  • Which excursions are booked, and at what price?

Pre-booked trips at fixed prices avoid beach-side selling and surprise costs mid-holiday.

  • What is the payment, change and cancellation policy?

Island hotels have their own terms; you should see them in writing before you pay a deposit.

How we run a Zanzibar trip

Safari Soles is a Tanzania-based team. This is what we do for every traveller who books an island stay with us, in plain language.

  • One planner, start to finish

The person who plans your route is the person who answers on the day you travel. No handover to an unnamed inbox.

  • Itemised quotes

Accommodation, transfers, flights, excursions and fees are listed separately so you can see exactly what you are paying for.

  • Safari and beach as one trip

We plan the parks, the internal flight and the island days together, which is where most Zanzibar itineraries go wrong.

  • Honest seasonal advice

If your dates fall in the long rains or a tide window that will not suit you, we say so and suggest an alternative.

Planned by people who live the route

This hub exists because the same Zanzibar questions come up on every safari enquiry we answer.
