Zanzibar Safari and Beach Holidays

The classic Tanzania trip is parks first, ocean second. Done well it is seamless; done badly you lose two days to airports. This guide is the logistics behind getting it right.

Do the safari first and Zanzibar second.

  1. Safari first and Zanzibar second is usually the strongest sequence. The exceptions are jet lag, flight routing, wedding or event dates and how your international tickets are constructed.
  2. Leave one buffer night before any international departure.
  3. Bush flight baggage is usually 15kg in soft bags; plan packing around it.
  4. June–October and January–February are the strongest combined windows.
  5. One operator for both halves means one person owns the connection.

Safari days start before sunrise and involve hours in a vehicle on corrugated roads. That is a wonderful way to spend a week and a terrible way to end a honeymoon. Ending on the island means the last thing you remember is the sea, and it gives your body a few slow days before a long-haul flight.

There is a practical reason too. Bush airstrips are weather-dependent and schedules move. If a Serengeti departure slips by three hours, a beach arrival simply becomes a later check-in. If the same delay sits between your beach and your international flight home, it becomes a missed connection.

Safari first works when

  • You arrive rested or can absorb one night in Arusha
  • You want the beach as recovery
  • It is a honeymoon or a long-haul return flight
  • You are climbing Kilimanjaro as part of the trip

Beach first can work when

  • You land with heavy jet lag and want two slow days
  • Your safari dates are fixed by a migration window
  • Your international flight departs from Zanzibar and the parks connect back
  • You are visiting in a month when the east coast wind matters more than tide

  • Light-aircraft baggage is typically 15kg per person in soft bags, hard cases refused.
  • Bush flights make scheduled stops. A two-hour flight can carry three landings.
  • Never book a same-day international departure out of Zanzibar after a bush flight.
  • Excess luggage can usually be stored in Arusha for the safari and collected later.

A ten-day safari and beach itinerary

The trip in sequence

This is the shape almost every successful safari + beach trip follows. Read it top to bottom. The order is the point.

  1. Arrive Kilimanjaro or Arusha

Overnight near the airport. Repack into a soft bag for the light aircraft.

Do not schedule a game drive on arrival day

  2. Safari, 3–6 nights

Early starts, long drives, the best wildlife hours at dawn and dusk.

  3. Transfer day to Zanzibar

Bush strip or Arusha to Zanzibar, then a road transfer to the coast. Assume it eats the day.

15kg soft-bag limit on light aircraft

  4. Coast, 4–6 nights

Single base. First day passive, activity days from day two.

  5. Stone Town or direct departure

A half day in Stone Town on the way to the airport works well if the flight is late.

Reversing this (beach first, safari second) leaves you flying home straight off a dusty 5am game drive.

  1. Day 1

    Arrive Kilimanjaro

Land at JRO, transfer to Arusha, overnight and trip briefing.

  2. Day 2

    Tarangire

Drive south to Tarangire for baobabs and elephant herds along the river.

  3. Day 3

    Ngorongoro Crater

Descend into the crater for a full day of dense wildlife, including black rhino.

  4. Day 4–6

    Serengeti

Two to three nights following the plains and, in season, the migration herds.

  5. Day 7

    Fly to Zanzibar

Morning game drive, then a light-aircraft flight to the coast and a transfer to your beach.

  6. Day 8–9

    Island days

One ocean excursion, one Stone Town or spice-farm half day, and time doing nothing.

  7. Day 10

    Fly home

Final morning on the beach, transfer to Zanzibar airport for the international flight.

Where we would add days

With twelve days, add one Serengeti night and one beach night rather than a new park. With fourteen, add a second beach base or a mountain-and-island combination before the safari.

What a combined trip costs

The safari half dominates the budget. Park fees, vehicles, guides and remote lodges make safari in Tanzania expensive per day; Zanzibar is comparatively affordable at every level, from guesthouse to private villa. As a rough planning figure, expect the safari to account for roughly two-thirds of the trip cost even when the beach half is longer.

The internal flight is a fixed cost most people forget in early budgeting. Add it, plus airport transfers at both ends, before you compare quotes. A cheap-looking safari quote that ends in the Serengeti is not a complete trip. Our Zanzibar travel cost guide breaks down the island side in detail.

  • Park and crater fees are per person per day and non-negotiable.
  • Internal flights are per person, one way, and priced by sector.
  • Beach hotels vary more by season than by category: festive weeks are a different market.
  • Excursions, drinks and marine park fees sit outside most board bases.

Safari first, beach second: and the rare exceptions

Almost every well-built Tanzania trip runs safari first and Zanzibar second, and the reasons are practical rather than aesthetic.

Safari days start before dawn, involve long hours in a vehicle on rough roads, and accumulate fatigue quietly. Doing them at the start means you arrive fresh, when early mornings are easy and enthusiasm is high. Zanzibar afterwards absorbs the tiredness rather than competing with it, and a beach week is the only part of the trip that can be adjusted downwards without losing anything. A slow day on the sand is still a good day, while a slow day in the Serengeti is a wasted permit.

The flight logic points the same way. The scheduled hops from the northern-circuit airstrips to Zanzibar are frequent and short, and Zanzibar has good international departures. Running the trip in reverse usually means an early beach-to-bush flight and a first game drive with your bags still being unpacked.

The exceptions are real but narrow: a very long-haul arrival where two recovery nights before safari genuinely help; a fixed date on the island such as a wedding; or a migration window that only works late in your dates. Outside those, safari first is the right default.

The mechanics people get wrong

  • Luggage limits. Light-aircraft transfers between parks and the coast typically restrict you to soft bags around 15kg. Hard suitcases are refused. Plan one soft bag and leave the rest in storage in Arusha if needed.
  • Zanzibar is a separate immigration point. Even arriving from mainland Tanzania you pass through an entry check on landing. See the travel requirements guide.
  • Mandatory travel insurance. Zanzibar requires visitors to hold the local mandatory travel insurance policy purchased in advance; a home policy does not replace it.
  • Do not fly out the same day you leave the beach. Build the departure buffer, especially for evening long-haul connections through Nairobi, Addis or Doha.
  • Malaria prophylaxis continues on the island. Zanzibar has low but non-zero transmission; take medical advice rather than assuming the beach leg is exempt.

Trek first, then the island: no safari, or add 3 nights

Two rules of thumb keep these honest. First, fewer camps, longer stays: three nights in two places beats one night in six, and every move costs you half a day. Second, five beach nights is where the island starts working. Three nights is a decompression stop, five is a holiday, seven is the one people wish they had booked.

Where the safari half is concerned, the Serengeti pairing and the Ngorongoro pairing pages explain what each park contributes and when, or see our Tanzania safari guides for the full circuit picture, including what a Serengeti safari or a Kilimanjaro climb each involve on their own.

Common mistakes to avoid

The planning slips we see most often. Each one is easy to avoid once you know it.

  1. Booking safari and beach with two separate operators and owning the connection yourself.
  2. Ending the trip in the bush and flying home exhausted.
  3. Planning a same-day bush flight and international departure.
  4. Arriving on the island with 25kg hard cases for a 15kg soft-bag flight.
  5. Allowing only two island nights after an eight-day safari.
Safari Soles planning note

When one team plans both halves, the internal flight, the baggage limits, the buffer night and the beach transfer are one problem rather than three. That is the whole argument for booking a combined trip rather than stitching it together: start from our Zanzibar planning hub if your dates are not fixed yet, then build a custom safari around them.

Questions worth asking any operator

Copy these questions into your enquiry: to us or to any operator you are comparing. The answers tell you more about a Zanzibar trip than any brochure.

  1. Who books and owns the internal flight between the parks and the island?
  2. What is the baggage limit on that flight, and where can we store the rest?
  3. How much buffer sits between our last game drive and the flight?
  4. Is there a night between the beach and the international departure?
  5. What happens, and who pays, if the bush flight is delayed?

What Safari Soles puts in writing

Nothing important about your trip should be discovered at check-in. Each of these is put in writing for your itinerary before you pay a deposit.

  • Which beach area, and why that one for our dates?

Tide, wind and atmosphere vary hugely by coast; the reason should match how you want to spend your days.

  • What exactly is included in the board basis?

Half board, full board and all-inclusive mean different things island to island: drinks and excursions are often outside.

  • How are transfers and internal flights handled?

Baggage limits, drive times and connection buffers decide whether a safari-to-beach day is calm or stressful.

  • Which excursions are booked, and at what price?

Pre-booked trips at fixed prices avoid beach-side selling and surprise costs mid-holiday.

  • What is the payment, change and cancellation policy?

Island hotels have their own terms; you should see them in writing before you pay a deposit.

How we run a Zanzibar trip

Safari Soles is a Tanzania-based team. This is what we do for every traveller who books an island stay with us, in plain language.

  • One planner, start to finish

The person who plans your route is the person who answers on the day you travel. No handover to an unnamed inbox.

  • Itemised quotes

Accommodation, transfers, flights, excursions and fees are listed separately so you can see exactly what you are paying for.

  • Safari and beach as one trip

We plan the parks, the internal flight and the island days together, which is where most Zanzibar itineraries go wrong.

  • Honest seasonal advice

If your dates fall in the long rains or a tide window that will not suit you, we say so and suggest an alternative.

Planned by people who live the route

This hub exists because the same Zanzibar questions come up on every safari enquiry we answer.

  • Locally based in Tanzania
  • Safari and island specialists
  • Licensed and insured operator
  • Fast, direct answers
