Zanzibar Honeymoon: Where to Stay and How to Plan It
Zanzibar is one of the few honeymoon destinations where the romance is not manufactured. Dhow sails at sunset, empty sand at dawn, and a spice-scented old town an hour away.

For a honeymoon, choose quiet over convenient:
- Small hotels beat big resorts here, the island rewards intimacy.
- A private plunge pool solves the low-tide hours on the east coast.
- Dhow sunset cruises and sandbank dinners are worth booking in advance.
- Tell the hotel it is your honeymoon. Most upgrade or decorate at no cost.
- Add three or four safari days first; the beach is a better ending than a beginning.

The trade-off across the island is always the same: the beaches with the best swimming have the most people, and the quietest beaches have the biggest tides. For a honeymoon we usually resolve it with a hotel that has both a good stretch of sand and a pool, so a low-tide afternoon costs you nothing.
If you want restaurants, sunsets and the option of a lively evening, Kendwa's smaller hotels are the compromise. If you want to see nobody, Pongwe and Michamvi are as close to private as the main island gets: read the beach comparison before you commit. Start from our Zanzibar travel guide if you are still deciding on the wider trip shape, and see Zanzibar for couples if this is a romantic trip rather than specifically a honeymoon.

Private villa, boutique hotel or resort?
Boutique hotel or small lodge
- 10–25 rooms, personal service, good food included
- Easy to meet other couples if you want to
- Excursions organised for you
- Best value for a one-week honeymoon
Private villa with staff
- Complete privacy, own pool and chef
- Better for 10+ nights or a group celebration
- You arrange excursions and transport
- Cost-effective when shared, expensive for two
A sea-facing room with a private terrace or plunge pool changes a Zanzibar honeymoon more than any other spend. Meals, spa treatments and excursions can be added later; the view from your bed cannot.

Romantic experiences that are actually good
- Sunset dhow cruise: traditional sail, an hour or two, best from the north or west coast.
- Sandbank picnic. A boat drops you on a bar of sand that exists only at low tide.
- Mnemba Atoll snorkelling: the clearest water on the island; a marine park fee applies.
- Stone Town evening: guided walk, rooftop sunset and dinner in the old town.
- Spice farm lunch: a genuinely interesting half day and the best Swahili meal of the trip.
- Private beach dinner. Most honeymoon hotels will set a table on the sand with notice.
Two of these in a week is plenty. The most common honeymoon regret in Zanzibar is over-scheduling: the island's best asset is the empty afternoon, and every excursion you add takes one away.

Adding a safari to the honeymoon
The classic Tanzanian honeymoon is four to six days on safari followed by a week on the island. The parks give you the shared adventure and the photographs; the island gives you the rest. Doing it in that order also means you fly home from the beach rather than from a dusty airstrip.
If you want the shorter version, three safari nights in the Serengeti plus seven island nights fits neatly into two weeks. See Serengeti and Zanzibar for how the flight connects. For the safari portion itself, our Serengeti safari guide covers routing and camps, and we can build a custom safari around your dates once the island nights are set.
- Tell us it is a honeymoon and we will flag it with every camp and hotel.
- Private vehicles on safari are worth it for a honeymoon: no shared sightings, your own pace.
- Keep the first island day empty after the flight from the parks.
- Budget the internal flight and marine park fees separately from hotel rates.

Which Zanzibar coast suits a honeymoon
Honeymoon disappointment on Zanzibar almost always traces back to one thing: the couple booked the picture and got the tide. Choosing the coast deliberately fixes it before it happens.
If your image of the trip involves swimming whenever you feel like it and a sunset drink over the sea, you want the north-west: Kendwa above all, which is quieter than Nungwi while sharing the same deep water and the same sunset. If your image is privacy, almost nobody on the sand and a small hotel where the staff know your name, you want the north-east around Matemwe and Pongwe, and you accept that the sea goes out and the pool covers those hours. The east and south-east give you space and value, and they suit couples who want a base with some village life around it rather than a resort bubble.
A split stay resolves most arguments. Three or four nights on one coast, three or four on another, with a Stone Town night in between, gives a honeymoon shape and variety without turning it into a logistics exercise.
Honeymoon fit by coast
| Coast | Fits couples who want | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Kendwa / north-west | All-tide swimming, sunsets, some life nearby | Busier; limited off-resort dining at Kendwa |
| Matemwe / north-east | Privacy, small hotels, Mnemba snorkelling | Tide-dependent sea; you eat in most nights |
| Michamvi / south-east | Space, sunset on the peninsula's west side, quiet | Fewer restaurants, longer to reach |
| Private island stays | Total seclusion and a set-piece | Expensive, and you cannot leave when bored |

Room types, privacy and the things worth asking before you book
- Ask what the room actually overlooks. 'Sea view' can mean across a garden, a path and two other roofs. Ask for the room category number and its position on the property map.
- Adults-only or not. A superb family hotel is a poor honeymoon hotel in August. Check the policy rather than the marketing.
- Private plunge pool is the single upgrade that most changes a Zanzibar honeymoon, especially on a tide-affected coast.
- Dining variety. On the quieter coasts you will eat at the hotel most nights: check that there is more than one menu and ask about private beach or sandbank dinners.
- Honeymoon extras are widely offered but must be requested in advance with proof of marriage date; they are not automatic.
- Book the tide, not just the dates. Tide tables are published well ahead; if you are on the east coast, knowing whether high water falls in the morning or the afternoon of your stay is genuinely useful.
- Leave a buffer day before the flight home. Ending a honeymoon in an airport rush is avoidable.
Ceremonies and vow renewals are possible and popular, but legal marriage in Tanzania involves paperwork and lead time; most couples marry at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here. If that is the plan, tell the hotel early: beach ceremonies are timed to the tide and the sunset, and the good slots go first. For the wider trip shape, the safari and beach guide covers how a honeymoon usually splits between bush and island.
Common mistakes to avoid
The planning slips we see most often. Each one is easy to avoid once you know it.
- Booking an east-coast hotel with no pool and discovering the low-tide afternoons.
- Choosing a 200-room resort on an island whose best hotels have twenty.
- Filling the week with excursions and never spending a full day at the hotel.
- Starting with the beach and ending with a 5am game drive before a long-haul flight.
- Not mentioning the honeymoon at booking. Most hotels give something for it.
Honeymoon rates are not a fixed thing in Zanzibar. Small hotels routinely add a room upgrade, a sunset cruise, a beach dinner or a spa treatment when a trip is booked through an operator they work with regularly. It is worth asking before you book direct.
Questions worth asking any operator
Copy these questions into your enquiry: to us or to any operator you are comparing. The answers tell you more about a Zanzibar trip than any brochure.
- Which rooms face the sea, and which have a private pool or terrace?
- What is the tide pattern on our dates, and is there a pool for low tide?
- What honeymoon inclusions does the hotel offer?
- Are the excursions private or shared?
- How long is the transfer from the airport, and is it included?
What Safari Soles puts in writing
Nothing important about your trip should be discovered at check-in. Each of these is put in writing for your itinerary before you pay a deposit.
-
Which beach area, and why that one for our dates?
Tide, wind and atmosphere vary hugely by coast; the reason should match how you want to spend your days.
-
What exactly is included in the board basis?
Half board, full board and all-inclusive mean different things island to island: drinks and excursions are often outside.
-
How are transfers and internal flights handled?
Baggage limits, drive times and connection buffers decide whether a safari-to-beach day is calm or stressful.
-
Which excursions are booked, and at what price?
Pre-booked trips at fixed prices avoid beach-side selling and surprise costs mid-holiday.
-
What is the payment, change and cancellation policy?
Island hotels have their own terms; you should see them in writing before you pay a deposit.

-
Itemised quotes
Accommodation, transfers, flights, excursions and fees are listed separately so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
-
Safari and beach as one trip
We plan the parks, the internal flight and the island days together, which is where most Zanzibar itineraries go wrong.
