Kendwa Beach, Zanzibar

Kendwa is Nungwi's quieter neighbour, three kilometres south: the same deep, swimmable water and the same sunsets, on a wider and considerably calmer stretch of sand.

Written and maintained by the Safari Soles planning team in Arusha, Tanzania.

Kendwa sits on the north-west coast just below Nungwi and shares its best feature:

  1. Same all-tide swimming as Nungwi, fewer people.
  2. Wider, softer sand than anywhere else on the north coast.
  3. Sunset faces straight out to sea.
  4. About 70–80 minutes from Zanzibar airport.
  5. Check the lunar calendar if you want total quiet.

How Kendwa differs from Nungwi

These two beaches are close enough to walk between at low tide, and they share the same geography. The northern tip's steep shelf that keeps the water swimmable all day. The difference is entirely in character and density.

Nungwi is a village that became a resort strip: hotels stacked along a narrow beachfront, bars, dive shops, boat touts, dhow builders and a constant hum. Kendwa is a handful of larger properties spread along a much wider bay. You can walk for ten minutes on Kendwa without passing anything. That space is the whole point.

If your ideal evening is a beach bar with music and a crowd, Nungwi wins. If it is a sundowner on an empty stretch of sand followed by dinner at the hotel, Kendwa wins. Most couples and families we send north end up in Kendwa.

Kendwa Nungwi
Beach width Very wide Narrower, busier
Swimming All tides All tides
Nightlife Hotel bars, monthly party Nightly, several venues
Walking off-property Limited options Full strip of restaurants
Vendor pressure Low to moderate Higher
Best for Families, couples, space Social travellers, divers

Choose Kendwa if…

  • You want all-day swimming without checking a tide table
  • Sunsets over the water and easy family beach time matter
  • You want restaurants within reach but a calmer stretch than Nungwi

Think twice if…

  • You want an isolated, undeveloped coast
  • Full moon party weekends would bother you
  • You want village life and local restaurants on your doorstep

The full moon party question

Kendwa hosts Zanzibar's best-known monthly beach party, held around the full moon at one venue on the bay. It draws a large crowd from across the island and runs late into the night.

Whether this matters depends entirely on how close your hotel is and how you feel about it. Properties at the far ends of the bay hear very little. Rooms near the venue will hear it clearly. If you are travelling with young children or want an early night, we check the lunar calendar against your dates and place you accordingly. It is a two-minute check that avoids a ruined night.

  • The party runs monthly, on or near the full moon.
  • Ask specifically how far your room block is from the venue.
  • Rooms on the quiet ends of the bay are barely affected.
  • If it appeals, book early: hotels fill on those dates.

What to do from Kendwa

  • Snorkelling and diving at Mnemba Atoll: boats leave from the north coast.
  • Sunset dhow cruise: Kendwa's west aspect makes this the highlight of most stays.
  • Sandbank picnic: low-tide sandbanks appear offshore and make an excellent half day.
  • Kayaking and paddleboarding. The bay is calm and shallow near shore.
  • Stone Town day trip: about 90 minutes each way; see the Stone Town guide.
  • Spice farm: usually combined with the Stone Town run.

Kendwa itself has no village centre to explore, which is exactly why it is quiet. If you want more variety within walking distance, Nungwi is the better base; if you want to be somewhere calm and take excursions out, Kendwa works perfectly. Our water activities guide covers what is worth booking.

For a first trip to Zanzibar

If you are choosing one beach with no prior experience of the island, Kendwa is the safest recommendation we give. It has the swimming, the sunsets and the sand, without the intensity of Nungwi or the tidal surprise of the east coast.

Kendwa or Nungwi? The honest split

These two beaches sit on the same north-west coast about twenty minutes apart, share the same tidal advantage and the same sunset, and are constantly confused with each other. The difference is not the water. It is density and what surrounds the sand.

Nungwi is a village with a beach economy grown into it: more restaurants, more bars, more boats, more sellers, more life and more noise. Kendwa is a shorter, softer bay of mostly resort frontage: fewer independent restaurants, calmer sand, and a beach that stays wide and swimmable through the tide with markedly less foot traffic. Most couples prefer Kendwa; most people who want somewhere to walk out to in the evening prefer Nungwi.

Kendwa Nungwi
Swimming Excellent at all tides Excellent at all tides
Sand and space Wide, soft, less crowded Wide but busier in the centre
Restaurants off-resort Limited The widest choice on the island
Nightlife Concentrated in a few beach venues and the full-moon events Broad, everyday, and louder
Beach sellers Present but lighter Persistent on the central strip
Best for Couples, honeymooners, swimmers, calm sunsets Groups, first-timers, divers, people who want options
Trade-off You will eat mostly where you sleep You trade quiet for choice

Sunsets, boats, full moon and the small print

  • Sunset is the asset. West-facing, unobstructed, and reliable year-round. The reason Kendwa costs more per night than an east-coast equivalent.
  • All-tide swimming is the other asset: the drop-off here means you can get in at low water, which is not true of most of the east coast.
  • Full-moon parties are a fixture at one or two venues and can be heard along the bay. If you want them, book near; if you do not, ask the hotel where they sit relative to the venue and check the lunar calendar against your dates.
  • Boat access to Mnemba is possible but longer from here than from Matemwe: treat a Mnemba day from Kendwa as a full-day excursion, not a morning.
  • Seaweed and tide lines are lighter here than on the east coast, but no Zanzibar beach is permanently spotless; hotels rake the frontage each morning.
  • Transfer from the airport runs roughly 1 to 1.5 hours. Add slack before a departure flight.

Kendwa's weakness is dining independence. There are a handful of good places on the sand, but nothing like Nungwi's range, so a week here usually means eating in your hotel most nights. That is fine at a good hotel and a slow disappointment at a mediocre one, which makes the hotel's kitchen a more important choice in Kendwa than almost anywhere else on the island. If eating out matters to you, either book Nungwi or split the stay. See the beach comparison for how the other coasts handle the same trade-off.

Common mistakes to avoid

The planning slips we see most often. Each one is easy to avoid once you know it.

  1. Booking near the party venue on a full moon date without realising it.
  2. Expecting a village or restaurant strip within walking distance.
  3. Assuming Kendwa and Nungwi are interchangeable. The feel is very different.
  4. Travelling in April or May, when the long rains hit the north coast hard.
  5. Booking a cheap room far back from the beach on a very wide bay.
Safari Soles planning note

Kendwa is the north coast's best compromise: reliable swimming and space on the sand. The only variable worth managing is the full moon date and your distance from the venue, and that is a question we answer before you book, not after. Compare it with the rest of the coast in our Zanzibar planning hub, and see our Zanzibar trips already built around this stretch.

Questions worth asking any operator

Copy these questions into your enquiry: to us or to any operator you are comparing. The answers tell you more about a Zanzibar trip than any brochure.

  1. How far is the room block from the full moon party venue?
  2. Which nights in our dates fall on or near a full moon?
  3. Is the hotel directly on the beach or set back?
  4. Are dinner options limited to the hotel?
  5. What is included in the transfer, and how long does it take?

What Safari Soles puts in writing

Nothing important about your trip should be discovered at check-in. Each of these is put in writing for your itinerary before you pay a deposit.

  • Which beach area, and why that one for our dates?

Tide, wind and atmosphere vary hugely by coast; the reason should match how you want to spend your days.

  • What exactly is included in the board basis?

Half board, full board and all-inclusive mean different things island to island: drinks and excursions are often outside.

  • How are transfers and internal flights handled?

Baggage limits, drive times and connection buffers decide whether a safari-to-beach day is calm or stressful.

  • Which excursions are booked, and at what price?

Pre-booked trips at fixed prices avoid beach-side selling and surprise costs mid-holiday.

  • What is the payment, change and cancellation policy?

Island hotels have their own terms; you should see them in writing before you pay a deposit.

How we run a Zanzibar trip

Safari Soles is a Tanzania-based team. This is what we do for every traveller who books an island stay with us, in plain language.

  • One planner, start to finish

The person who plans your route is the person who answers on the day you travel. No handover to an unnamed inbox.

  • Itemised quotes

Accommodation, transfers, flights, excursions and fees are listed separately so you can see exactly what you are paying for.

  • Safari and beach as one trip

We plan the parks, the internal flight and the island days together, which is where most Zanzibar itineraries go wrong.

  • Honest seasonal advice

If your dates fall in the long rains or a tide window that will not suit you, we say so and suggest an alternative.

Planned by people who live the route

This hub exists because the same Zanzibar questions come up on every safari enquiry we answer.

  • Locally based in Tanzania
  • Safari and island specialists
  • Licensed and insured operator
  • Fast, direct answers
