Tarangire and Zanzibar

Tarangire is the shortest good safari in Tanzania: two hours from Arusha, thick with elephants, and quick enough to leave you real time on the island.

Tarangire sits about two hours from Arusha, which makes it the only Northern Circuit park you can do properly on a week-long trip that also includes a real beach stay.

  1. Best short safari for a seven to nine day trip.
  2. Dry season, June to October, is dramatically better here than the green season.
  3. Two nights is enough; three if you add Lake Manyara.
  4. Scheduled flights to Zanzibar mean normal baggage allowances.
  5. Pairs easily with Ngorongoro if you have two extra days.

The Serengeti is the greater park, and nobody sensible argues otherwise. But it is also a long way from anywhere: either a full day's drive or a bush flight with a 15kg baggage limit, and it demands three nights minimum to justify getting there. On a seven-day trip that includes Zanzibar, it simply does not fit without making both halves feel rushed.

Tarangire fits. It is two hours from Arusha on tarmac, so you can land at Kilimanjaro in the morning and be on a game drive by mid-afternoon. In the dry season the river is the only permanent water for a long way, and the concentration of elephant, buffalo, zebra and wildebeest around it is spectacular: herds of a hundred elephants are unremarkable here. The baobab-studded landscape is also the most photogenic in northern Tanzania.

Add the tree-climbing lions and flamingos of Lake Manyara half an hour away, and two or three days gives you a genuine safari rather than a token one.

The simplest safari-to-island transfer in Tanzania

This is the main practical advantage of the Tarangire combination. From the park you drive two to three hours back to Arusha or straight to Kilimanjaro International, then take a scheduled 75 to 90 minute flight to Zanzibar. No light aircraft, no 15kg soft-bag limit, no weather-dependent bush strip, just a normal flight with a normal baggage allowance.

That matters more than it sounds. Every itinerary that includes a Serengeti bush flight requires you to repack, leave luggage in storage and accept a small risk of delay. This one does not. If you are travelling with children, with dive gear, or simply with a suitcase, the Tarangire route removes a whole category of hassle. The wider mechanics are covered in the safari and beach guide.

  • Tarangire to Arusha: about 2 hours; to Kilimanjaro airport: about 3.
  • Arusha or Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar: 75–90 minutes, several daily services.
  • Standard airline baggage rather than a bush-flight limit.
  • Airport to a north-east beach: 45–60 minutes; north coast 60–75.
  • Leave the park in the morning and you are on the sand by evening.

What this combination costs

Within safari in Tanzania, Tarangire is one of the cheaper Northern Circuit parks: lower park fees than Ngorongoro, no crater descent fee, no bush flight, and lodges outside the park boundary that cost a fraction of a Serengeti camp. For travellers who want a real safari and a real beach on a limited budget, this is the most efficient combination in Tanzania.

As a rough shape, expect the safari portion of a seven-day trip to run considerably less than the equivalent Serengeti itinerary, with the saving going into better hotels on the island. Detailed island numbers are in the travel cost guide; for the full circuit comparison see Tanzania safari and Zanzibar or the wider Tanzania safari guides.

Choose Tarangire if

  • You have seven to nine days total
  • You want to keep four or more beach nights
  • You are travelling with a normal suitcase
  • You are travelling June to October
  • Budget matters and you still want good game viewing

Choose the Serengeti instead if

  • You have eleven days or more
  • The migration is the reason you are coming
  • You want big cats above all else
  • A bush flight and 15kg limit are no obstacle
  • It is your one and only Africa trip

Common mistakes to avoid

The planning slips we see most often. Each one is easy to avoid once you know it.

  1. Booking Tarangire in the long rains and wondering where the elephants went.
  2. Allowing only one night and spending it mostly in transit.
  3. Trying to add the Serengeti to a seven-day trip that also includes Zanzibar.
  4. Flying to the island on the same day as your international departure.
  5. Choosing a lodge far from the park gate to save money, then losing an hour each morning.
Safari Soles planning note

This is the itinerary we recommend most often to people who say they only have a week. It is not a compromise safari, in the dry season Tarangire is genuinely excellent, and it protects the beach half of the trip instead of eating it in transfers. Start from our Zanzibar planning hub, or have us design the itinerary.

Questions worth asking any operator

Copy these questions into your enquiry: to us or to any operator you are comparing. The answers tell you more about a Zanzibar trip than any brochure.

  1. How far is the lodge from the park gate?
  2. Are park fees included in the quote?
  3. Is the flight to Zanzibar scheduled or a light aircraft?
  4. How many full game-drive days do we actually get?
  5. Is there a buffer before our international departure?

What Safari Soles puts in writing

Nothing important about your trip should be discovered at check-in. Each of these is put in writing for your itinerary before you pay a deposit.

  • Which beach area, and why that one for our dates?

Tide, wind and atmosphere vary hugely by coast; the reason should match how you want to spend your days.

  • What exactly is included in the board basis?

Half board, full board and all-inclusive mean different things island to island: drinks and excursions are often outside.

  • How are transfers and internal flights handled?

Baggage limits, drive times and connection buffers decide whether a safari-to-beach day is calm or stressful.

  • Which excursions are booked, and at what price?

Pre-booked trips at fixed prices avoid beach-side selling and surprise costs mid-holiday.

  • What is the payment, change and cancellation policy?

Island hotels have their own terms; you should see them in writing before you pay a deposit.

How we run a Zanzibar trip

Safari Soles is a Tanzania-based team. This is what we do for every traveller who books an island stay with us, in plain language.

  • One planner, start to finish

The person who plans your route is the person who answers on the day you travel. No handover to an unnamed inbox.

  • Itemised quotes

Accommodation, transfers, flights, excursions and fees are listed separately so you can see exactly what you are paying for.

  • Safari and beach as one trip

We plan the parks, the internal flight and the island days together, which is where most Zanzibar itineraries go wrong.

  • Honest seasonal advice

If your dates fall in the long rains or a tide window that will not suit you, we say so and suggest an alternative.

Planned by people who live the route

This hub exists because the same Zanzibar questions come up on every safari enquiry we answer.

  • In the dry season, very much so. From June to October the Tarangire River draws the highest elephant concentrations in northern Tanzania, in a striking baobab landscape.
