How Many Days to Spend in Zanzibar
Zanzibar is small but slow. Transfers, tides and a genuinely relaxing pace mean the difference between three nights and five nights is much bigger than it looks on paper.

Five to seven nights is the sweet spot for Zanzibar.
- 3 nights = a decompression stop after safari, one excursion at most.
- 5 nights = beach, Stone Town and one ocean day, comfortably.
- 7 nights = the classic island week; adds a second beach area or diving.
- 10+ nights = two-base trip, or Zanzibar plus Mnemba, Pemba or Mafia.
- Cross-island transfers run 1–2 hours; budget half a day when changing base.

| Nights | Realistic plan | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 nights | One beach base, one excursion, two full beach days | Post-safari rest, short add-on to a Tanzania trip | Half your first and last day is travel |
| 5 nights | Beach base, Stone Town day, one ocean trip, two lazy days | Most first-time visitors | Do not try to change hotels mid-stay |
| 7 nights | As above plus diving, Jozani, spice farm or a second beach | Honeymoons, families, classic beach weeks | Book excursions early in peak season |
| 10+ nights | Two bases, e.g. north coast then east coast, or add Pemba/Mafia | Slow travel, diving trips, longer honeymoons | Inter-island flights add cost and baggage limits |

The most common regret we hear is not that a trip was too long. It is that three nights turned into one usable beach day. Arrivals into Zanzibar are often early afternoon, and departure transfers leave three hours before an international flight, so a three-night stay is closer to two days on the sand.
When the itinerary is tight, protect whichever half has the hardest logistics or the most time-sensitive experience. A short Serengeti safari may need every safari night it has (two nights in one region is already thin) while a longer or more generous safari usually leaves more flexibility to preserve enough Zanzibar time to avoid a rushed beach stay. Check the best time to visit guide before locking dates either way.

How many island nights to add after a safari or climb
| Trip before the beach | Nights we recommend | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 3–4 day northern circuit safari | 4 nights | Enough to unwind and do one excursion |
| 6–8 day Tanzania safari | 5–7 nights | Balances a long, early-start safari with real rest |
| Kilimanjaro climb | 5–7 nights | Legs need two slow days before any activity. See Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar for the full recovery plan |
| Safari plus climb | 7 nights | Two weeks of effort deserves a full island week |
| Honeymoon after a wedding | 7–10 nights | The point is not to move at all |

Flights from the Serengeti to Zanzibar vary by airstrip, airline, season and operating day (some services are direct, others make intermediate stops) and most land early to mid-afternoon. Count that as a travel day, not a beach day, and never book a same-day international departure out of Zanzibar after a morning game drive.

A seven-night Zanzibar week that works
- Day 1
Arrive and settle
Land at Zanzibar, transfer to the north or east coast, swim, sunset, early night.
- Day 2
Nothing at all
The first full day is deliberately empty. Sea, shade, long lunch, no alarm.
- Day 3
Ocean day
Snorkelling at the reef or a Mnemba Atoll trip, back by mid-afternoon for the beach.
- Day 4
Stone Town
Guided walk through the old town, Darajani market, House of Wonders area and the Forodhani night food gardens. See our Stone Town guide for the detail.
- Day 5
Spice farm or Jozani
Half day inland for a spice tour or the red colobus monkeys of Jozani Forest, beach in the afternoon.
- Day 6
Free day
Dhow sunset cruise, kitesurf lesson, diving, or another day of doing absolutely nothing.
- Day 7
Slow morning, fly
Final swim, late checkout where possible, transfer to the airport.
Shorter versions
- Five nights: drop the free day and either the spice farm or Jozani.
- Four nights: keep Stone Town and one ocean trip, nothing else.
- Three nights: one excursion maximum, and stay on the coast closest to your arrival.

Should you split your stay between two beaches?
Stay in one place if
- You have seven nights or fewer
- You are travelling with young children
- It is a honeymoon and unpacking twice sounds like work
- You want the hotel to know you by day three
Split your stay if
- You have eight nights or more
- You want both deep-water swimming and the kite coast
- You want two nights in Stone Town for culture and food
- You are combining Zanzibar with Pemba or Mafia
A cross-island transfer takes one to two hours on roads that are fine but slow. It costs you a swim, a lunch and an unpacking session: worth it over eight nights, rarely worth it over five. If you do split, put Stone Town at the start or end rather than in the middle, so you are not driving back past the airport. Pairing the island with a safari first? See safari and beach planning for how many nights each half needs.
Common mistakes to avoid
The planning slips we see most often. Each one is easy to avoid once you know it.
- Booking three nights and expecting a beach holiday rather than a rest stop.
- Counting the arrival and departure days as full beach days.
- Changing hotels twice in a five-night stay.
- Booking a same-day international flight after a morning bush flight from the parks.
- Filling every day with excursions on a trip whose whole point was to slow down.
Tell us your total holiday length and we will split it between parks and island for you, the same way we frame it in our Zanzibar travel guide. In our experience the balance most people are happiest with is roughly two-thirds safari, one-third beach for a first Tanzania trip, and the reverse for a second visit or a honeymoon. If you would rather see it costed, compare ready-made Zanzibar itineraries.
Questions worth asking any operator
Copy these questions into your enquiry: to us or to any operator you are comparing. The answers tell you more about a Zanzibar trip than any brochure.
- What time do we actually arrive on the island, and how long is the transfer?
- How many usable beach days does this itinerary really contain?
- Is late checkout available on our departure day, and at what cost?
- If we add one night, what does it change in price?
- Are excursion days scheduled around the tide?
What Safari Soles puts in writing
Nothing important about your trip should be discovered at check-in. Each of these is put in writing for your itinerary before you pay a deposit.
-
Which beach area, and why that one for our dates?
Tide, wind and atmosphere vary hugely by coast; the reason should match how you want to spend your days.
-
What exactly is included in the board basis?
Half board, full board and all-inclusive mean different things island to island: drinks and excursions are often outside.
-
How are transfers and internal flights handled?
Baggage limits, drive times and connection buffers decide whether a safari-to-beach day is calm or stressful.
-
Which excursions are booked, and at what price?
Pre-booked trips at fixed prices avoid beach-side selling and surprise costs mid-holiday.
-
What is the payment, change and cancellation policy?
Island hotels have their own terms; you should see them in writing before you pay a deposit.
How we run a Zanzibar trip
Safari Soles is a Tanzania-based team. This is what we do for every traveller who books an island stay with us, in plain language.
-
One planner, start to finish
The person who plans your route is the person who answers on the day you travel. No handover to an unnamed inbox.
-
Itemised quotes
Accommodation, transfers, flights, excursions and fees are listed separately so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
-
Safari and beach as one trip
We plan the parks, the internal flight and the island days together, which is where most Zanzibar itineraries go wrong.
-
Honest seasonal advice
If your dates fall in the long rains or a tide window that will not suit you, we say so and suggest an alternative.

Frequently Asked Questions

Three nights is enough to rest after a safari and do one excursion, but not enough for a beach holiday in its own right. Four to five nights is where the island starts to feel unhurried.
