Zanzibar vs Mafia Island

Mafia Island is what people imagine Zanzibar was thirty years ago. Whether that makes it the better choice depends on why you are coming to the coast at all.

Choose Mafia if diving and marine life are the point of the trip.

  1. Mafia wins on diving, snorkelling and whale sharks.
  2. Zanzibar wins on choice, culture, access and price range.
  3. Mafia has perhaps a dozen places to stay; Zanzibar has hundreds.
  4. Whale shark season on Mafia runs roughly October to March.
  5. Combining both is possible but eats two travel days.

Why divers go to Mafia

Mafia Island Marine Park was Tanzania's first, and the protection shows. Chole Bay is a large, sheltered lagoon with coral bommies rising from shallow sand, and the outer reefs drop into currents that bring in bigger fish. Because so few people dive it, the sites are not worn down: coral cover is better than at Mnemba, and you routinely have a site to yourself.

From around October to March, whale sharks gather in the plankton-rich water off Kilindoni on the island's west side. These are juvenile animals feeding at the surface, and encounters are snorkel-based, in shallow water, often within a few hundred metres of shore. It is one of the more reliable whale shark aggregations in the Indian Ocean, and it is the single strongest reason to choose Mafia over Zanzibar.

The caveat is that this is a wild aggregation, not a guaranteed attraction, and the operators matter enormously. Choose one that limits swimmer numbers, keeps a respectful distance and does not drop people directly in front of the animals.

  • Whale shark season: roughly October to March, peaking November to February.
  • Chole Bay diving is sheltered and suits all levels.
  • Marine park fees apply per person per day.
  • Diving is boat-based and short: most sites are minutes away.
  • Green turtles nest on the island's beaches.

Why most people still choose Zanzibar

Zanzibar offers a complete holiday rather than a specialist one. You can spend two nights in Stone Town walking a UNESCO World Heritage old town, take a spice tour, see red colobus at Jozani, and then have five very different beaches to choose from depending on whether you want to swim, kite or hide.

It also has the depth of accommodation that makes trips possible. Honeymooners can spend US$900 a night on a villa; a couple in their twenties can spend US$60 on a beachfront room in Jambiani. Mafia has no equivalent range. It is largely a mid to upper market destination with a handful of properties, and when they are full, they are full.

Finally, access. Zanzibar has direct flights from Europe and the Gulf and constant domestic hops from Arusha, Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti. Mafia requires connecting through Dar es Salaam on a small aircraft with a limited schedule, which typically costs a travel day at each end.

Pick Zanzibar if

  • It is your first trip to the Tanzanian coast
  • You want culture as well as beach
  • You need a wide choice of hotels or a specific budget
  • You are combining with a safari on tight dates
  • You want beaches that are least dependent on the tide for swimming

Pick Mafia if

  • Diving or snorkelling is the main reason you are coming
  • You want whale sharks between October and March
  • You have been to Zanzibar before
  • Total quiet matters more than choice
  • You can spare the extra travel day each way

Can you visit both on one trip?

Yes, but be realistic about the cost in days. There is no useful direct link, so a Zanzibar to Mafia move routes via Dar es Salaam and consumes most of a day, as does the return. On a two-week trip that includes a safari, that is a lot of your remaining time in airports.

Our usual advice: if you have fourteen days or fewer and want a safari, pick one island. If you have eighteen days or more and diving is central, do the safari, then Mafia for the reef, then finish with two nights in Stone Town on the way home. The Dar connection makes that sequence work better than the reverse.

An 18-day version that works

  1. Days 1–7

    Northern circuit safari

Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, finishing with a bush flight to Dar es Salaam.

  2. Days 8–12

    Mafia Island

Diving in Chole Bay and, in season, whale sharks off Kilindoni.

  3. Days 13–16

    Zanzibar north-east coast

Beach recovery, Mnemba if you still want more reef, and complete rest.

  4. Days 17–18

    Stone Town and home

A night in the old town, then the direct international flight out of Zanzibar.

Common mistakes to avoid

The planning slips we see most often. Each one is easy to avoid once you know it.

  1. Choosing Mafia for a beach holiday when you actually want variety and swimming.
  2. Booking Mafia outside whale shark season expecting to see them.
  3. Underestimating the Dar es Salaam connection when combining islands.
  4. Assuming Mafia has Zanzibar's range of hotels and restaurants.
  5. Leaving Mafia accommodation late: there is very little of it.
Safari Soles planning note

This is a genuine either/or for most itineraries, and the honest answer usually comes down to one question: is diving the reason you are going to the coast? If yes, Mafia. If not, Zanzibar will give you a better week, and we will say so even though both are ours to book. Use the Zanzibar travel guide and the beach comparison to narrow the island side, or ask us to price both versions before you decide.

Questions worth asking any operator

Copy these questions into your enquiry: to us or to any operator you are comparing. The answers tell you more about a Zanzibar trip than any brochure.

  1. Do our dates fall in whale shark season on Mafia?
  2. What are the flight connections and how many hours do they cost?
  3. What marine park fees apply, and are they in the quote?
  4. What is the operator's whale shark encounter policy?
  5. If the island's hotels are full, what is the alternative?

What Safari Soles puts in writing

Nothing important about your trip should be discovered at check-in. Each of these is put in writing for your itinerary before you pay a deposit.

  • Which beach area, and why that one for our dates?

Tide, wind and atmosphere vary hugely by coast; the reason should match how you want to spend your days.

  • What exactly is included in the board basis?

Half board, full board and all-inclusive mean different things island to island: drinks and excursions are often outside.

  • How are transfers and internal flights handled?

Baggage limits, drive times and connection buffers decide whether a safari-to-beach day is calm or stressful.

  • Which excursions are booked, and at what price?

Pre-booked trips at fixed prices avoid beach-side selling and surprise costs mid-holiday.

  • What is the payment, change and cancellation policy?

Island hotels have their own terms; you should see them in writing before you pay a deposit.

How we run a Zanzibar trip

Safari Soles is a Tanzania-based team. This is what we do for every traveller who books an island stay with us, in plain language.

  • One planner, start to finish

The person who plans your route is the person who answers on the day you travel. No handover to an unnamed inbox.

  • Itemised quotes

Accommodation, transfers, flights, excursions and fees are listed separately so you can see exactly what you are paying for.

  • Safari and beach as one trip

We plan the parks, the internal flight and the island days together, which is where most Zanzibar itineraries go wrong.

  • Honest seasonal advice

If your dates fall in the long rains or a tide window that will not suit you, we say so and suggest an alternative.

Planned by people who live the route

This hub exists because the same Zanzibar questions come up on every safari enquiry we answer.
