Ngorongoro and Zanzibar
Ngorongoro is the most concentrated wildlife day in Africa and Zanzibar is the softest possible landing afterwards. The only real question is how you get between them.

Two nights on the crater rim is the right amount:
- Two crater-area nights, then four to five on the island, is the classic shape.
- Always do the crater descent early. The gate opens at dawn and the light is best.
- The road transfer to Arusha is 3.5 hours; budget it properly.
- Ngorongoro pairs naturally with Tarangire and Lake Manyara.
- Do the safari first and the beach second, never the reverse.

The crater floor is a 260 square kilometre caldera holding around 25,000 large animals, including one of the densest lion populations anywhere and a small population of black rhino. Because it is enclosed, a single well-run day gives you a genuinely comprehensive game drive. This is the one place in Tanzania where one day is nearly enough.
That said, one day means two nights on the rim: arrive in the afternoon, descend at dawn the next morning, and leave the following day. Descending on your arrival afternoon is possible but wastes the best light and the coolest hours. Vehicle permits are issued for a limited window on the crater floor, so an early start matters more here than anywhere else in Tanzania.
A third night lets you add Lake Manyara's tree-climbing lions and flamingos, a walk on the rim, or a visit to Olduvai Gorge. Whether that is worth it depends on how many beach nights you are protecting.
| Nights on the rim | What you get | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A rushed afternoon or a dawn descent, not both | Too tight |
| 2 | One full crater day at the best hours | The standard, and enough |
| 3 | Crater plus Manyara, Olduvai or a rim walk | Worthwhile if days allow |

Drive or fly to Zanzibar?
Drive to Arusha, then fly
- 3.5 hours by road from the crater rim to Arusha
- Then a 75–90 minute flight from Arusha or Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar
- Cheaper, and you see the Rift Valley escarpment
- Costs most of a day; standard airline baggage applies
Fly from Lake Manyara airstrip
- Short drive down the escarpment to the airstrip
- Light aircraft, often via Arusha, on to Zanzibar
- Saves roughly half a day of travel
- 15kg soft-bag limit; noticeably more expensive
- Do not plan to leave the crater rim and reach a Zanzibar beach hotel the same evening if you are driving. The timings are tight and delays are common.
- Light-aircraft baggage is 15kg per person in soft bags; store the rest in Arusha.
- Bush flights are weather- and load-dependent; never book an onward international flight the same day.
- Add a night in Arusha or Stone Town if your connection is late.
The full mechanics of the safari-to-island connection, including which airports work and how the baggage rules bite, are in the Zanzibar safari and beach guide. If you are also visiting the Serengeti, the Serengeti and Zanzibar guide covers that flight instead.

What it costs and what to pack
A day like this is why safari in Tanzania is priced the way it is: conservation area fees, a separate crater descent fee per vehicle, and rim lodges that price accordingly. Expect the safari half of the trip to be roughly two-thirds of the total budget, with the island half comparatively cheap. The Zanzibar travel cost guide covers the beach side in detail, or see the wider Tanzania safari guides for how Ngorongoro fits the rest of the circuit.
On packing, this is a genuinely two-climate trip. The crater rim drops to single figures Celsius at night and dawn game drives in an open vehicle are cold. Twelve hours later you are in tropical humidity. A fleece and a windproof layer are not optional, and neither are reef shoes. The full list is in the packing guide.
- Fleece, windproof layer and long trousers for the rim.
- Neutral colours for game drives; nothing dark blue or black.
- Soft duffel under 15kg if any leg is on a light aircraft.
- Binoculars: the crater floor is wide and animals can be distant.
- Reef shoes and reef-safe sunscreen for the island half.
Choose this if
- You have seven to ten days and want one unmistakable wildlife day plus real beach time
- You want high sighting density without long transfers between parks
- You are happy with two nights on a cold rim in exchange for a dawn descent
- This is a first Tanzania trip and you want the landmark experience
Think twice if
- You want a wilderness feel. The crater floor is enclosed and can be busy with vehicles
- You are chasing the migration; that is a Serengeti decision, not a crater one
- You dislike altitude and cold mornings; the rim sits above 2,200 metres
- You have fewer than six days in total, where a single-park trip works better
Common mistakes to avoid
The planning slips we see most often. Each one is easy to avoid once you know it.
- Allowing only one night on the rim and missing the dawn descent.
- Descending into the crater in the afternoon instead of at first light.
- Trying to reach a Zanzibar beach hotel the same day you leave the rim by road.
- Booking an international flight the same day as a bush flight.
- Packing only for the tropics and freezing on the rim.
Ngorongoro and Zanzibar is the shortest route to a complete Tanzania trip: big-five game viewing and a proper beach in eight days. The thing we protect hardest in the plan is the dawn crater descent and a realistic transfer day afterwards; rush either and the whole trip feels hurried. Start from our Zanzibar planning hub, or have us design the itinerary.
Questions worth asking any operator
Copy these questions into your enquiry: to us or to any operator you are comparing. The answers tell you more about a Zanzibar trip than any brochure.
- How many nights are on the crater rim, and when do we descend?
- Are crater descent and conservation fees included in the quote?
- Are we driving to Arusha or flying from Manyara?
- What is the baggage limit on each flight?
- Is there a buffer night before our international departure?
What Safari Soles puts in writing
Nothing important about your trip should be discovered at check-in. Each of these is put in writing for your itinerary before you pay a deposit.
-
Which beach area, and why that one for our dates?
Tide, wind and atmosphere vary hugely by coast; the reason should match how you want to spend your days.
-
What exactly is included in the board basis?
Half board, full board and all-inclusive mean different things island to island: drinks and excursions are often outside.
-
How are transfers and internal flights handled?
Baggage limits, drive times and connection buffers decide whether a safari-to-beach day is calm or stressful.
-
Which excursions are booked, and at what price?
Pre-booked trips at fixed prices avoid beach-side selling and surprise costs mid-holiday.
-
What is the payment, change and cancellation policy?
Island hotels have their own terms; you should see them in writing before you pay a deposit.

Eight days is the realistic minimum: two nights on the crater rim, a transfer day and three beach nights. Ten to twelve gives a much better balance.
