Kenya Safari and Zanzibar: Combining Bush and Island
Ending a Kenya safari on Zanzibar means crossing an international border for your beach week. It is often worth it, but only if the flights and the night count are planned properly.

- Zanzibar
- In Tanzania: an international leg
- Total trip
- 10 nights or more
- Island stay
- 4–7 nights
- Kenyan alternative
- Diani or Watamu
Written and maintained by the Safari Soles planning team in Arusha, Tanzania.
Zanzibar sits off the Tanzanian coast and connects to Kenya by regional flight, usually via Nairobi or Mombasa.
- Zanzibar is an international leg from Kenya: plan the connection, and build in a buffer day.
- Allow at least four or five nights on the island; three is not worth the transfer.
- Ten nights total is the realistic minimum for a balanced safari-and-island trip.
- The Kenyan coast is a legitimate, simpler and usually cheaper alternative to Zanzibar.
- June to October and January to February suit both halves; April and May are the risky window.

Why the combination works
A safari is intense. You wake before dawn, spend hours concentrating from a vehicle, and by the fifth morning most travellers are running on adrenaline and coffee. A beach week afterwards is not indulgence; it is what turns an exhilarating trip into a restful one, and it is why most well-designed East African holidays are built in two halves.
Zanzibar is the most established version of that second half. Stone Town's layered Swahili, Omani and Indian history gives the island a cultural depth few beach destinations have. The reefs off the east coast and around Mnemba are genuinely good for snorkelling and diving. Dhow sailing at sunset, spice farms, Jozani's red colobus monkeys and a strong spread of hotels from simple guesthouses to serious luxury complete the picture.
It also contrasts properly with the bush. Coming from the dust and space of the Mara to a humid, green island with a totally different culture and cuisine makes both halves feel more vivid than either would alone.

How the flights actually work
Zanzibar is served by regional carriers connecting Nairobi and Mombasa with Zanzibar's airport, and by seasonal charters. From a Kenyan safari, the typical routing is a light aircraft from your bush airstrip back to Nairobi Wilson, a transfer across the city to Jomo Kenyatta, and a regional flight on to Zanzibar. That cross-city transfer is the part people underestimate: Nairobi traffic can turn it into two hours, and it usually means the whole day is a travel day.
The alternatives are worth knowing. Some routings connect via Mombasa, which suits a southern Kenya safari ending in Tsavo. Others go via Dar es Salaam or Arusha, which makes more sense on a combined Kenya and Tanzania trip. Schedules change seasonally, so the practical routing depends on the month you travel.
Because this is an international leg, luggage rules change again. Light aircraft in Kenya limit you to soft bags at a strict weight; the regional jet to Zanzibar has a normal allowance. If you are flying in the bush, pack to the tightest limit on the itinerary. See the packing list.
Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so this leg is an international border crossing with its own entry requirements and, at times, health documentation. Entry rules can change: check the official Kenya eTA and Immigration website and Tanzania's official immigration service before booking or travelling. Kenya's eTA has stated exemptions: citizens of East African Partner States including Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda are currently exempt under the conditions set out officially, so confirm what applies to your own passport.
The usual connection, leg by leg
-
Bush airstrip → Nairobi Wilson
Approximate flight time: 45 min – 1 hr 30
Trade-off: Light aircraft schedules move with weather and passenger loads; treat the morning as unreliable.
-
Wilson Airport → Jomo Kenyatta International
Approximate road time: 45 min – 2 hrs
Trade-off: Nairobi traffic is the single biggest risk in this itinerary. Build hours of buffer, not minutes.
-
Nairobi → Zanzibar
Approximate flight time: 1 hr 30 – 3 hrs, direct or via Dar es Salaam
Trade-off: An international leg with its own entry formalities and a normal luggage allowance.
-
Zanzibar airport → Beach hotel
Approximate road time: 30 min – 1 hr 30 · Overnight: 4+ nights
Trade-off: East-coast hotels are the furthest; north-west is closest to the airport and Stone Town.
All journey times are approximate. Traffic, weather, road conditions, stops, gate choice and airstrip schedules all change them.
Why the beach goes last
Safari days start before dawn and accumulate. Putting the island at the end means arriving relaxed rather than exhausted, and it also protects the safari half: if a bush flight is delayed, you lose beach time rather than a game drive you cannot repeat.

How many nights each half needs
The most common mistake is squeezing the island into two or three nights. With a full travel day at each end, three nights on Zanzibar gives you roughly a day and a half of actual beach, which is not enough to justify the international leg or the cost.
Four nights is the honest minimum, five is comfortable, and seven turns the island into a proper second holiday with room for Stone Town at one end and the beach at the other. On the safari side, five nights is the practical minimum for two regions, or four if you stay in one.
That arithmetic puts the realistic total at ten nights and upwards. If you only have a week, do not force this combination, either do a Kenya safari properly and skip the beach, or take a shorter safari and finish on Kenya's own coast, which is a domestic flight rather than an international one.
- 10 nights
- 5 safari (Mara plus one region) + 1 travel + 4 Zanzibar. The minimum that feels balanced.
- 12 nights
- 6 safari + 1 travel + 5 Zanzibar. Room for a conservancy and for Stone Town.
- 14 nights
- 7 safari + 1 travel + 6 Zanzibar, or add Tanzania's Serengeti to the safari half.

- Nothing much: this is the version with slack
- Sample route
- 3 nights Samburu, 4 nights Maasai Mara, travel day, 6 nights Zanzibar.

- Trade-off
- The most expensive shape; consider fewer regions and better camps instead.
- Three safari regions or a Tanzania leg

Variations by who is travelling
- Honeymoons
- Conservancy camp then a north-west or east-coast beach hotel. See the honeymoon guide.
- Families
- Shorter safari legs, a pool at both ends, and a reef-protected beach. See the family guide.
- Divers and snorkellers
- North or north-west Zanzibar, or Watamu on the Kenyan coast for a simpler trip.
- Tight budget
- Swap Zanzibar for Diani: a domestic flight, no border, lower cost.
This is a starting point rather than an objective ranking. The right answer changes with your dates, your nights and who is travelling.

Zanzibar or the Kenyan coast?
This is the real decision, and it is closer than most itineraries admit. Kenya's south coast at Diani has a superb, wide white-sand beach, easy domestic connections from Nairobi and no border formalities. Watamu is quieter, with a marine national park that is excellent for snorkelling. Lamu is a different proposition again: car-free, historic and slow.
Zanzibar's advantages are atmosphere and range. Stone Town has no equivalent in Kenya, the hotel spread at the top end is deeper, and the island's reefs and sandbanks are outstanding. Its disadvantages are the extra flight, the extra cost, tidal beaches on the east coast where swimming is limited at low tide, and a busier feel in high season.
As a rough rule: choose Zanzibar if the culture and the diving matter and you have the nights. Choose the Kenyan coast if you want simplicity, lower cost or a family trip where fewer transfers is worth more than novelty. See Kenya safari and Diani and the broader safari and beach comparison.

Timing both halves
The two halves do not share a calendar, which is the subtlety in this combination. Kenya's classic safari window runs June to October, with January and February a strong quieter alternative. Zanzibar's most reliable weather is broadly June to October and again from around late December to February, with the heaviest rains typically in April and May and shorter rains around November.
Fortunately, the overlap is generous. June to October suits both. It is the peak of Kenyan safari season and dry, breezy weather on the island. January and February suit both as well, with hotter and more humid island conditions but excellent visibility for diving.
April and May are the one window to approach carefully: it is the long rains in both countries, and while the safari half can still work with the right camps and enough nights, an island week in the heaviest rain is a gamble. See best time to visit Kenya for the safari half in detail.

Practical points that catch people out
A few details recur often enough to be worth listing before you book.
- Build a buffer. Do not connect a bush flight to an international departure on the same day without hours to spare. Light aircraft schedules move.
- Two sets of entry rules. Kenya and Tanzania each require their own authorisation and have their own health documentation requirements.
- Tides on the east coast. Some east-coast beaches recede a long way at low tide. If uninterrupted swimming matters, look at the north or north-west.
- Ramadan. Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim, and during Ramadan some restaurants and services operate differently. It changes the atmosphere rather than spoiling the trip.
- Dress in Stone Town. Modest dress is expected away from the beach and hotel grounds. It is a small courtesy that is noticed.
- Currency and cards. Card acceptance is patchy outside larger hotels on the island; carry some cash.

Not well. One week leaves roughly three nights each side plus a travel day, which shortchanges both. Either extend to ten nights or use Kenya's own coast instead.
