What to pack for a safari?

Packing for safari is different from any other trip. Your guide and driver will prioritise your protection from the sun, insects, and the elements. The bush is dusty, unpredictable, and alive — every item on this list earns its place in your bag.

There's a lot to consider: from the layering system for cold morning game drives and hot afternoons, to neutral colours that don't startle wildlife. That's exactly why we built this list — and made it available as a PDF so you can check off every item before you leave.

The Complete List

👕

Clothing

  • Neutral-coloured shirts (khaki, tan, olive)
Bright colours startle wildlife and attract insects.
  • Light long-sleeve shirts
Morning drives are cold; afternoons are hot — layers are key.
  • Fleece or light jacket
Essential for pre-dawn drives, especially Oct–May.
  • Convertible trousers
Zips off to shorts when temperatures rise after 10am.
  • Wide-brim hat
Direct sun exposure in an open vehicle is intense.
  • Comfortable walking shoes / closed sandals
For camp walks and short nature trails.
🎒

Gear & Equipment

  • Binoculars (8×42 or 10×42)
The single most important piece of wildlife viewing equipment.
  • Camera with telephoto lens (200mm+)
Animals won't come closer for a selfie.
  • Dust-proof camera bag or dry bag
Dirt tracks produce constant fine dust — it destroys equipment.
  • Spare memory cards & batteries
    No shops in the Serengeti.
  • Universal power adapter + USB-C charger
    Tanzania uses Type D/G outlets.
  • Headlamp
Camps often have limited lighting after dark.
🧴

Health & Protection

  • High SPF sunscreen (50+)
Equatorial sun at altitude is severe — reapply every 2 hours.
  • DEET insect repellent (30%–50%)
Malaria prophylaxis is essential — consult your GP before travel.
  • Malaria tablets
Start taking them before departure as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Hand sanitiser & wet wipes
Remote areas often lack running water.
  • Basic first aid kit
Plasters, antiseptic, blister pads — camps are far from clinics.
  • Prescription medications + extra supply
Carry 2× your needed supply in case of flight delays.
📄

Documents & Money

  • Passport (valid 6+ months)
Tanzania requires 6 months validity beyond your departure date.
  • Tanzania e-Visa printout
Apply at visa.immigration.go.tz — keep a printed copy.
  • Travel insurance documents
Medical evacuation cover is essential — minimum $500k recommended.
  • USD cash (small bills)
Tipping guides, porters, and small local purchases require USD.
  • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate
Required if arriving from/via a yellow fever country.

Pro Tips from Our Guides

01
Keep a small day bag in the vehicle

Sunscreen, binoculars, water, snacks, and your camera should be immediately accessible during game drives — not buried in your main luggage.

02
Pack light — really

Most bush flights have a strict 15kg luggage limit. Use soft-sided bags only. Your camp does laundry.

03
No dark blue or black

Tsetse flies are attracted to dark colours — especially blue and black. Stick to khaki and olive.

04
Bring a scarf or buff

Doubles as dust protection on bumpy tracks and a warm layer on cold mornings.
