Things to do in Bagamoyo

Visiting kaole ruins;

A small town and archaeological site three miles east of Bagamoyo. The area contains old stone ruins dating to a period between the 13th and 16th centuries. The site consists of two mosques and 30 tombs. The tombs were built from coral stones with stone pillars that marked some of the tombs. According to local tradition, some of the tombs are the graves of local rulers. A small museum has been established, exhibiting some artifacts that were found in the ruins. Some of these artifacts are Chinese, evidence of ancient commercial relationships.

Was built and used by the Germans as their state house and leader’s residence at the end of the 19th Century before being moved to Dar es Salaam. The same building was used by the British as offices after World War One when the Germans lost the war. After Independence, it was under the Government of Tanzania before being turned into a historical building.
