How Cold Does It Get on Kilimanjaro?

Temperature During the Day and at Night

Kilimanjaro spans five distinct climate zones, each with dramatically different temperatures. The biggest temperature drops happen between 3,000m and the summit. Here is what to expect at both the base and the summit, day and night.

Rainforest Gate
1,800–2,800m
Day 20–25°C
Night 10–15°C
Moorland
2,800–4,000m
Day 10–15°C
Night 0–5°C
Alpine Desert
4,000–5,000m
Day 5–10°C
Night -5 to -10°C
Summit (Uhuru Peak)
5,895m
Day -5 to 5°C
Night -15 to -20°C

When Is Kilimanjaro Coldest?

Coldest Periods

June–August: The driest season is also the coldest at the summit. Summit night temperatures regularly reach -15°C to -20°C with windchill below -25°C. These months have the best clear-sky probability but demand the most serious gear.

Gear tip: Bring a sleeping bag rated to at least -15°C and a good down jacket. See the full packing list →

Milder Periods

January–March & October–November: Summit temperatures are typically -5°C to -12°C at night. Still cold enough to require serious gear, but windchill is less severe. Lower zones can feel warm and humid.

How Difficult Is It to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro?

Kilimanjaro is not a technical climb. There are no ropes, no rock faces, and no previous climbing experience required. However, the altitude is extremely serious. Over 40% of climbers experience acute mountain sickness (AMS), and about 35% fail to summit on shorter routes due to altitude-related illness.

Physical fitness matters, but acclimatisation is the dominant factor. A highly fit athlete on a 5-day Marangu route is more likely to fail than a moderately fit person on an 8-day Lemosho route.
